Our future Chartered Project Professional assessment

The future of how we assess our Chartered Project Professionals is being built, ready for launch in 2027. 

This is part of our ongoing focus to maintain the standard and value for those who hold ChPP and to ensure our assessment holds the rigor, objectivity and accessibility our profession demands.   

The new assessment will:  

  • Future proof our assessment to ensure we harness technological advances whilst maintaining quality competence testing.
  • Enhance global accessibility to support all project professionals towards ChPP.  
  • Continue to offer each applicant the same excellent experience to support their application.

Work starts now, alongside assessment experts and you – the profession – to inform, pilot and be part of our new assessment development.

You can now register your interest to take part in our 2026 pilot of our future assessment construct. ​

​If you’re selected to take part, you’ll be given the opportunity to experience the future of how we’ll ensure every new Chartered Project Professional has the technical knowledge, professional practice and ethics, compliance and professionalism to carry the title Chartered Project Professional. ​

​This is a live pilot – so every candidate who passes the assessment will walk away with ChPP status. 

What’s new?

  • The chance to showcase your technical knowledge and professional practice in a more intuitive way.
  • Fairness and rigour are at the heart of the new assessment to ensure that high standards are maintained.
  • Improved journey thanks to clear objectives at every stage and new support materials to level the field and ensure everyone can access ChPP.​

Am I eligible to take part?

You need to be ‘professionally active’. This means:

  1. Having a proven track record delivering projects, programmes, portfolios or a key control or enabling function.
  2. Having up-to-date knowledge of current practices and methods.
  3. Being actively involved in the project management profession.

Dates for your diary

You’ll need to be free for both the exam and presentation/Q&A.

22 April or 23 April 2026
11/2 hour written exam on technical knowledge.

Between 27 April and 1 May 2026
1 hour 5 minutes presentation with Q&A on professional practice, and ethics, compliance and professionalism.

Timeline at a glance

Ongoing

Expression of interest open to register for a place on our pilot assessment.

February 2026

Pilot candidates selected and notified; guidance materials launched.

April 2026

 Candidates will sit our new assessment.

Spring 2026

 We’ll be conducting analysis of what we saw and heard throughout the pilot using feedback submitted by those involved.

Summer 2026

 If the pilot was successful and approved, from this point, teams across APM will start the creation of our new assessment model.

Late 2026 into 2027

 We will support the transition of the profession from the current to the new assessment with the launch of the new assessment in Spring 2027 subject to a successful pilot and approvals.

 

Frequently asked questions

Project professionals and applicants  

The guidance to all project professionals is to continue in your personal development as normal. There will be no change in the status or standing of your achievement irrespective of the model you choose.

If you are looking to achieve ChPP Status in early 2026, our pilot may be of interest – so be sure to register your interest.  

Mentors  

Thank you for continuing to support those who are applying for ChPP. There will be no impact on the current application process in the near future so please continue doing the same great work.  

If you have any pilot candidates approach you for support, the competences they require will be the same and we’ll share with you how we’ll be assessing these. 

Organisations with Recognised Assessments  

There will be no impact on your candidates or your role as providers of a recognised assessment during the development of our new assessment model.

We’ll keep you well informed as we progress this development and will remain on hand if you have any questions.

BAE Apprentice students - APM Project Simulation Feedback

The APM Simulation session was delivered as an intensive one day event, spanning approximately eight hours, and provided an excellent opportunity to apply a wide range of project management skills within a fast paced, simulated environment. The focus was a construction project, delivered through interactive, scenario based, Prendo software that tested both technical knowledge and professional judg
